The Mother's Day is an anniversary calendar spread throughout the world. In Italy fell regularly on 8 May, until it was decided to fix the second Sunday in May, taking on the U.S..
It is a very ancient festival, linked to the worship of fertility deities of the ancient polytheistic peoples, which was celebrated in the very year in which the passage of nature from the winter cold and static to full summer of smells and colors (and prosperity in the ancient civilization of farmers) was more evident. With the passing of time this holiday by the religious tone has evolved into a commercial holiday, sometimes even in the festival.
In the United States in May 1870, Julia Ward Howe, attivista pacifista e abolizionista (della schiavitù), propose di fatto l'istituzione del Mother's Day (Giorno della madre), come momento di riflessione contro la guerra. Fu ufficializzata nel 1914 dal presidente Woodrow Wilson con la delibera del Congresso di festeggiarla la seconda domenica di maggio, come espressione pubblica di amore e gratitudine per le madri e speranza per la pace. La festa si è diffusa in molti Paesi del mondo, ma cambiano le date in cui è festeggiata.
In Italia fu celebrata per la prima volta nel 1957 da don Otello Migliosi ad Assisi, nel piccolo borgo di Tordibetto di cui era parroco. Migliosi la celebrò la seconda domenica di Maggio.
In molti Paesi la ricorrenza è stata copied from western civilization: in Africa, for example, some states established the Mother's Day, inspired by the British concept of the same.
